What are MAM Baby products made of?

More about polypropylene

MAM has been using polypropylene (PP) for its baby bottles since 2004. PP is rigid, tough and strongly heat-resistant. Many items for medical or laboratory use are made from PP because it can withstand the heat in an autoclave for sterilisation. PP is resistant to fats and almost all organic solvents. It has good resistance to fatigue and is virtually unbreakable, odourless and skin-friendly. It is suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications, it is physiologically safe and biologically inert.

More about silicone

Infant care products made with silicones satisfy the highest quality standards demanded by healthcare professionals and families. Because they are resistant to bacteria and easy to sterilise. They do not react with other materials and do not irritate the body. Used externally, internally or intravenously, silicone materials do not generate unwelcome by-products or trigger allergic reactions. Silicones can closely approximate the consistency of skin and offer exceptional cushioning and comfort in prosthetics.

The exclusive MAM SkinSoftTM Silicone is softer than other types of silicone. We developed a unique silicone for our bottle and pacifier nipples in collaboration with experts from research, development and medicine. It is softer than other types of silicone and perfect for babies as it feels like a mum’s soft skin. Thanks to its anti-slip surface, the pacifier stays easily in baby’s mouth and babies love it: 94% accept the MAM nipple with its SkinSoftTM Silicone surface (market research 2009-2017, tested with 1,508 babies).

More about borosilicate

With glass bottles as an alternative to polypropylene (plastic) bottles MAM offers parents the opportunity to choose. As baby bottles need to withstand high temperatures like sterilization and severe temperature fluctuations like taking the bottle from the fridge to a warming or heating process, the glass used by MAM for baby bottles is borosilicate. It has been proven to resist variations in temperature in contrast to standard glass. MAM also choses this material for its structural and food safety advantages. It does not absorb or release odours, flavours or colours, is resistant to thermal shock, scratching and shattering or sudden breakage.

More about natural rubber,
also called latex

Did you know that many of our pacifiers are also available with a natural rubber nipple? In terms of safety and quality latex is currently the only natural alternative to silicone that we can recommend.

Natural rubber, also called latex, is obtained from the latex milk of the rubber tree (hevea tree). MAM uses fresh, natural rubber from Thailand, where it is directly processed. Local production enables the fresh rubber milk to be processed quickly, eliminating long transportation routes and the associated loss of quality. Thanks to a special production process known as “leaching”, natural rubber is particularly low allergy.

Compared to silicone, latex or natural rubber is more bite-resistant and softer, darker in colour and has a slight odour and flavour of rubber. Because we offer products made from both materials, parents are free to choose according to their own preferences or baby’s liking. Whichever they choose, they can be sure that both materials comply with all relevant standards.

What are MAM Baby products NOT made of?

Safety is of utmost importance for MAM. That’s why we say “no” to:

Bisphenol A (BPA):

This is a chemical substance used in the production of PC and has been strongly criticized as it may harm the endocrine system and other bodily functions. That´s why all MAM pacifiers and baby bottles as well as all other MAM products are BPA free.

Bisphenol S (BPS):

Possible health risks have not yet been scientifically proven but are under investigation. All MAM Baby products are made from materials free of BPA and BPS (BPA Free in accordance with Regulation (EU) No.321/2011).

PVC/chlorine compounds and phthalates:

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a synthetic, brittle polymer that may contain phthalates (substances used as plasticizers) to make it more flexible. We do not use PVC or phthalates, even in our packaging films, although this is not a legal requirement.

Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) or other heavy metals:

MAM Baby products do not contain intentionally added heavy metals. The colors used in our products are internationally approved for use in food-related applications.

Bioplastics:

Whether bio-based plastics are ultimately better than the plastics currently being used is a big question surrounded by a lot of “ifs”. What matters most to us is that most bioplastics currently available are not sufficiently break-proof and heat-resistant, and often degrade in boiling water. For these reasons, MAM has made the conscious decision not to use bioplastics until the functional and safety qualities we demand can be guaranteed.

Recycled plastics:

At present it is technically not possible to identify everything what is incorporated in the recyclate. Until the purity of available recycled materials cannot be guaranteed to a sufficient extent, we regard these materials as fundamentally unsafe for us. That is why, until this situation changes, MAM does not use recycled plastics or recycled paper at all.

Our quality management & testing methods

Good is not good enough.
We do not just meet the highest standards for baby products, we exceed them – and have been actively involved in shaping them at the European level for many decades.
